Description:
This is a Japanese lacquerware box called Fu-Bako
(文筥 in Japanese)
, which was used to keep letters, paper and stationary.
Of course, you can use it in any way with your creative thinking.
It is made of wood, Urushi (Japanese lacquer), powder of gold and mother of pearl shell.
"Japanese Ume plum tree in full blossom" is
mesmerizingly depicted
with Raden and Makie techniques.
Raden technique is to cut out mother of pearl shell into decorative pieces, and glued on the wood covered by Urushi. Makie technique is used to dipict some blossoms in golden color.
This box is an excellent expample of high quality of Raden + Makie work done by very experienced Raden artist in Japan.
The wooden box is original  (photo #12). On the surface of the lid, you can see "加賀螺鈿" and "
文筥" in Japanese. It means a box to keep letters, paper and stationery, which was made using Raden technique in Kaga. Kaga is a mecca of Japanese lacquerware.
On the back of the lid, the previous owner drew "昭和五三年陽春
信之新調" in Japanese
.
It means that Nobuyuki (previous owner) bought this box in spring of 1978
. It means probably the box was made in 1977 or 1978, i.e., 44 ~ 45 yesrs ago.
Condition:
Overall, it is in excellent condition as a vintage lacquerware box though some faint marks
can be
observed (photo #10). It is consistent with the age of this item, and should not be an issue.
