Description
Antique Japanese Meiji (1868-1912) Presentation Box, Gilt Black Lacquer with Silk Tassels together with an unrelated LetterFor your consideration is an impressive presentation or letter/document box aka Fubako
Long rectangular shape made of wood with black lacquer, skillfully hand painted with goldens sakura branches (blooming cherries), bamboo and pine shoots
A cherry or chrysanthemum blossom, reminiscent to the Imperial Seal is also present, along with rhomboid patterns
Very exquisite work altogether, exhibiting the quintessential beauty of highest quality Japanese art piece
Golden colored silk cords with tassels are attached on both sides, most likely these were meant to hang down when the box is presented with a stretched out hand, adding solemnity to the moment
It came to us with a letter, typed on a original stationary, bearing the logo of the General Society of the War of 1812,
an American charitable organization of male descendants of American veterans of the War of 1812
The letter is dated 1958, and is pertaining to some genealogy research
Signed by
Mr. Ross Keelye Cook, Deputy President General of the organization back then
We don't believe this to be anyhow related to the box itself, it was just stored inside
We are offering it together with the letter, as found
