Overview:
This is a Sigaraki-ware(*) incense container called
Kogoh in Japanese.
It was originally made for tea ceremony to contain
incense in it
.
Of course, you can use it in any ways with your creative idea.

Shigaraki-ware is a s
toneware,
which is made of a special clay (only available in Shigaraki area) and baked at very high
temperature (1,200 ~ 1,300 degrees Celsius). It does not use glaze at all. Thus, it looks very natural and primitive.
Stoneware is s
till produced in Japan, because it is loved by the people who practice tea ceremony.
Design:
The motif (or design) of this incense container is "GARAN-SEKI
" (= a stone used in a big temple).
"GARAN" means a big temple (building). And "SEKI" means a stone.
"GARAN-SEKI" are stones which are placed between the ground and pillars when a big temple is built.
Those stones used at old big temples were very much loved by tea masters. They felt Wabi & Sabi in those and used in their team gardens.
One day a potter in Iga area made Kogoh in this shape to attract tea masters.
Today, kogoh in this shape are being made in Iga and Shigaraki nearby Kyoto in Japan.
Artist:
This kogoh was made by
HONIWA Rakunyu (保庭楽入)
. He is known as a topnotch potter in Sigaraki and produces mainly tea utensils. He himself has deep insight in tea ceremony (photo #12)
He engraved his sign at the outside surface of the bottom (photo #11).
Condition:
It is in excellent condition.
No chips or cracks at all.
It seems not used.
The box is original and signed by the artist.
