Description
This is a 376 year oldantique Japanese
funa-dansu
( ships chest) from the mid Edo
Era (c. 1648).
Fune-dansu
were used as portable document and money chests as well as ships logs.
This
funa-dansu
(ships tansu chest) is
made of solid
sugi
(cryptomeria) wood exterior with a kiri (paulwnia) wood interior. and
has a nice configuration of six
drawers, two of which lock with included key ( see pictures 18 & 19).
It is signed by the original owner,
慶安元年 Keian gannen or The first year of Keian 1648
, on the bottom (see pictures 20 & 21).

he method of construction (all wooden pin construction - see picture 16) as well as all the forged iron o
n this chest dates it to the early Edo Edo Era (c. 1648) or even earlier.
The latching front door opens by pushing a latching button (see pictures 14 & 15) and closes securely when the door is closed . The top handle is still very secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest (see last picture). All drawers open and close smoothly. The five hinged door swing
s open and closes easily.
Along with a three century old orinal warm patina, other than some minor loss on the upper rear (see picture 17) and the replacement of one smaller drawer (see picture 16) t

good
original antique
condition.

chest measures 13" wide by 14 1/2 '' tall by 17" deep (30 x 37 x 43 cm).
