Description
Description:This is a Japanese lacquerware Tanzaku-bako box (* see note below)
made during 1780s - 90s in Nagasaki. Nagasaki was only one port allowed to trade with foreign countries (Holand, China and Korea only) at that time in Edo period.
* It is a box to keep Tanzaku, which are shown in the last photo. Waka or Haiku (=traditional Japanese short poem) were written on them. Tanzaku is not a part of this offering.
The box is decorated with beautiful scenery and flowers using RADEN technique. It is to paste sliced pieces made from mother of pearl using japan (natural Japanese lacquerare) as glue.
The quality of work is extraordinary and extremely mesmerizing. These boxes were made during very short period (
1780s - 90s) in Nagasaki
. Some were exported to Europe through Holand.
It is stored in the original wooden box (photo #17 & 18). Its patina is consistent with the age of this work. The code is worn out. If you would like, we are happy to provide a brand new one as a gift.
The Tanzaku-bako box is in excellent condition as an antique Japanese lacquerware.
